Called Esq. A writer from Stirling.
763,769 In this context a writer is an old Scottish word for a lawyer.
In 2009 I got a lot of Peddie information from a researcher called Mary (I don’t know her last name), who responded to a request I made to the Central Scotland Family History Society (or some such similar name). If you ever read this, Mary, many thanks!
All 6 children were alive in 1841 census living in Broad Street, Stirling. In 1851 his wife is presumably dead as are Catherine and Jane. James, George and Janet were at home but by 1861 they are not listed so presumably they have emigrated.
In 1854 James remarried to a farmer’s daughter called Catherine Graham who was aged 50. On the 1861 census there is just James and his second wife along with Cecilia. This remarriage may have prompted the emigration of the older three children.
James Peddie lived in Broad Street in Stirling and probably carried on his business from the house. In 1861 he was employing an apprentice.
On the valuation roll James Peddie is the Trustee for property which he also lived in. Interestingly the owner of this property was James Taylor, merchant in Crieff. Taylor was his wife’s maiden name.
His brother William is living in property owned by James Christie, a farmer. Christie is the maiden name of his mother.
