Notes for Gertrude Norgrove
Lived in Wellington. 9 children – 7 boys – 2 girls. Visited Kate and Charlie and her children with Valerie and Kate and had the more-ish coconut ice. Eldest, John, Manager of Wisemans Saddle Shop in Auckland. One boy died about 9.
Kate’s account is not clear, but one descendant, a Gertrude Dempsey, wrote The Little World of Stewart Island, published in 1964 by AH and AW Reed, Wellington. She also wrote a number of other books about Stewart Island it seems. You can even still buy them.
According to Marion Dempsey, whose husband was the G-grandson of Gertrude, she was born on the 18th of October, 1844. I don’t have independent confirmation of either date.
