Antoine and Francoise Boileau
Antoine and Francoise Boileau
Antoine Boileau and Francoise Troussellier. Antoine Boileau, d. 1530, 6th Baron, became treasurer, the reversion of the office being executed to him by Charles VIII in 1494. Antoine purchased the estate of Castelnau-de-la-Garde, and of St. Croix de Boirac, from the Comte Secoudin de St. Felix, for £400. In 1497 he married Françoise, daughter and heiress of Dr. Jean Troussellier (councillor and principal physician to Charles VIII).
Two Boileau
Two Boileau
Jacques Boileau on the left, and the famous poet, Nicolas Boileau Despreaux on the right. The poet is a distant cousin only. I'm not sure which Jacques this is (there were quite a few Jacques Boileau). It says clearly that he was a Mareschal de France, and a Marquis, which means he is NOT the Jacques who died in prison (my ancestor).

Jacques Boileau, the prisoner, on the left, and Antoine and Francoise on the right. Old Granny had this; a colourised version was later sent to me by Eric Breuzet, a descendant of the French branch. There is writing at the bottom, in Latin, which is shown in detail in another photograph.
Boileau notes
Boileau notes
Notes made by my Grandmother, I believe, on the back of a Boileau portrait. Not one of my direct ancestors, though.
Etienne Boileau
Etienne Boileau
Etienne Boileau. c1200 - c1269. The traditional founder of the Boileau family, but this is highly doubtful in actual fact. Most probably the Boileau were originally drapers, who got ideas above their station. This is a statue of Etienne in front of the Hotel-de-Ville in Paris. Etienne Boileau is mentioned in Joinville, as Grand-Provost of Paris in 1250.

J.Boileau_inscription
J.Boileau_inscription
Detail of the inscription below the portrait of Jacques Boileau. It reads (in the translation of Francoise Breuzet): "This sorrowful face expressing meagreness and sadness provoked by what he has borne, his forehead deformed by wrinkles, his neglected and plentiful beard, are those of an exiled man having adhered to ideas prevalent in Europe for a long time. His expression shows the cruel fate which is reserved for him. In memory of this imprisonment, an honest woman named JOANNE GARNIER from Lyon, had hand-drawn this portrait of noble LORD JACQUES de BOILEAU, domain of Castelnau, Sainte Croix, in the year 1694, April 15, captive 8 years, 3 months, 3 days. He died on july 17 1697-born in 1671. Prisoner for 11 years, 11 months, 6 days."

Sir Maurice Boileau
Sir Maurice Boileau
Sir Maurice Boileau with Lady Margaret and Lady Lucy. Nobody seems to know who the ladies are. I certainly don't, and neither does Eric Breuzet, who sent me the picture. Then, in September 2008, Mary Parker, the churchwarden of Ketteringham, sent me the following information. "I was pleased to see the photograph of Sir Maurice Boileau. He died in 1937, a bachelor, but was much liked and still remembered by the older villagers. The older lady on the right is his mother Lady Lucy Boileau (died 1925), wife of Sir Francis (died 1900). The lady on the left is Dr Margaret Boileau, his (only) unmarried sister. She died in 1923 and was a remarkable lady. I have not seen this particular photograph before, but have seen many like it. They are sitting on a seat at Ketteringham Hall."

Patent of Nobility, but I'm not sure whose. Probably a Boileau one. One thing for sure; it didn't belong to my mother's line. They were sheep-stealing McPhersons.

Boileau Mausoleum at Ketteringham. This photo was sent to me in September, 2008, by Mary Parker, the churchwarden of Ketteringham. It had just been restored. In Mary's words: "Only Sir John and Lady Sarah Boileau are in there [the mausoleum] as their descendants preferred to be buried nearby. In the long shot view of the mausoleum the graves in the foreground are, from left to right, Sir Raymond Frederic (4th baronet) and his wife Lady Ethel (the novelist) Boileau both died 1942, Sir Maurice Colborne B (3rd baronet) died 1937, Dr Margaret Lucy Augusta Boileau died 1923. Behind the trunk of the sweet chestnut on the right of the mausoleum is the grave of Sir Francis George Manningham B (2nd baronet) (died 1900) and Lady Lucy Augusta (nee Nugent) his wife (died 1925)."
