James Graham Sir James Graham of Kirkstall, York (1753-1825). My 5G Uncle. Son of Thomas Graham of Edmond Castle and Margaret Coulthard.
Created a Baronet 3 October 1808, Recorder of Appleby, M.P. for Cockermouth 1802-5, for Wigtown Burghs 1805-6, again for Cockermouth 1807-12, and for Carlisle 1812-25. Bloody hell. No wonder they made the poor bugger a baronet. Married Anne Moore of Kirkstall, Yorks, and had issue. His son was sir Sandford Graham, 2nd Bt. etc etc. More issue. This baronetcy lasted only to the fifth generation, dying out in 1895.
The Grahams of Kirkstall had the same coat-of-arms as the Grahams of Edmond Castle, but with the motto “Fideliter et diligenter”. It last appears in the 1895 edition of Burke’s Peerage and Baronetage.

Olive Graham Olive (Olivia) Graham of Edmond Castle (her name is on the back). F.R.G.S., m. 15 July, 1920, Rev. Edward Evelyn Barber, Rector of Ongar 1913-1928. Apparently she was of a scientific bent. I like to believe she was good at it. Dad doesn’t.
[GEC] calls her Aunt Olive and says she had no children.
You have to feel sorry for her, this being the only picture I have of her. Thus doth posterity doom us by our red cheeks.

Detail on front of Edmond Castle It reads TH 1829 MG, and commemorates the marriage of Thomas Henry Graham to Mary Carnegie (note the Graham escallops and the Carnegie eagle). This was the Thomas Graham that had this mansion built, greatly extending the previous house.
