A Neal and Busch family gathering at Marshlands. I can identify a few faces, but most I can't. Thomas Nelson Neal and Lena Busch are there in the front, the old couple, John Frederick Neal at the back. No idea of the others, but there were a lot of them.

Sophia Christina Dorothea Busch, nee Grebin (1807-1880). Mother of Lena Busch. What an old battleaxe. I'm glad I didn't marry her. Arrived in Nelson in 1844.

Magdalena Louisa Sophia Busch. What a mouthful. Called Selina, or Lena. 1849-1925. She married Thomas Nelson Neal, the first (or one of the first) Pakeha baby born in Nelson.

Kate and John Frederick. Possibly taken in Sydney or Melbourne. Kate always said that Grandfather told her that if she married him he'd take her to Australia for her honeymoon. And as the boat went round the heads, it stood on its end twice (in Kate's exact words, as she told the story often).

In the middle is Thomas Nelson Neal (old guy with beard) and his wife Lena Busch. Directly on his right is my G-grandfather, John Frederick Neal, and to his right is Kate Edith Norgrove (my G-grandmother). In the second row, fifth from right (with big white hair bow and pointy lace collar) is my maternal grandmother, Freda Alice (daughter of John Frederick and Kate). In the front row, second child from left (with cute little tie thingy) is Algy or Rangi, Freda's brothers. Can't find the other one.

Algy's wedding. Algy married Gwen Halliday in Timaru. Robert McPherson (Mum's father) is 2 from right, Valerie is front left, and Mum is the little girl 2 from left in the front. To the left of Gwen (the bride) is Gwen's sister, Dora Norgrove Halliday. According to Joan McNaught, the Hallidays were great family friends, who farmed at Camden, up the Awatere valley. Mum and family drove down from Blenheim for the wedding, Mum sat on Algy's knee, and was sick all over his uniform.
