She and her husband both died at 9 Shannon Street, Mt Victoria, WELLINGTON, the home of their son-in-law W.A.J. Dutch (information from Penny, who was researching that area. It’s also listed in EVENING POST, VOLUME LXXXVI, ISSUE 89, 11 OCTOBER 1913, although not the exact address).
His wife was Jean, or Jane, Murray, and his son-in-law was W.A.J. Dutch, for what that’s worth.
807At some stage he lived in MacLaggan St., Dunedin, as his sister Janet was married from there in 1861. This is very likely the James Peddie who appears in the Dunedin Electoral roll of 1865, and possibly the one who was married in Knox Church on the 31st of December, 1866, to a Murray.
He was the recipient of a Crown grant for land, as on the 5th of May, 1864, he is listed as someone who hasn’t picked up their grant yet, and please hurry up and do it.
He was still living in Dunedin when his daughter, Annie, married in 1901. He died at his daughter’s house in Wellington, on 11 Oct, 1913. (
EVENING POST, VOLUME LXXXVI, ISSUE 89, 11 OCTOBER 1913). Annie was married to William Alexander Justice Dutch.
OTAGO WITNESS, ISSUE 709, 1 JULY 1865 tells the story of how James’ drapery store got burgled; a pair of tweed trousers was stolen!
A researcher named Penny told be a lot of information about James Peddie. Here is a direct quote from the email she sent me (thanks Penny!)

I was confused about whether James Peddie was married to Jane or Jean. She's Jane when she has their two children (Births Deaths and Marriages NZ Govt - Trace your Family History), Jane when she votes from Cumberland street in Dunedin and from Shannon street in Wellington and Jane on her Probate file at Archives NZ. However her death notice and burial is in the name Jean. It's certainly the same woman - her children are named executors of her will - so I guess she just preferred to be called Jean by friends. Her children as executors state 'Jane' was born in Stirling Scotland. And her marriage notice is in the 'Otago Daily Times' 31 December 1867. (Also on-line on Paper Past) Jane's the youngest daughter of the late John Murray, merchant, Glasgow.
The Otago electoral rolls of 1870/71 and 1875/6 … says James had freehold land in Cumberland Street Dunedin Section 43, Block 21. In 1880 his occupation was gardener.
In 1896 James, Jane, James John and Annie all vote from Cumberland Street with no street number yet.
Then in 1900 ... James takes off - somewhere or other. Jane Peddie's probate file dated 30 August 1920 should be on Family Search, Church of the Latter Day Saints as most of the New Zealand Probate Files have been copied there so they can be viewed outside NZ for free. Her will is dated 19/4/1900. She's 'the wife of James Peddie formerly of Dunedin, aforesaid gardener, but now of parts beyond the seas'. She leaves Section 43, Block 21 to her son and daughter.
Then Jane and Annie vote together on the roll still in Dunedin Otago - 'domestic duties' for both. I can find no trace of James!
In 1905/6 Jane is in Shannon Street and is a 'widow'. But James reappears as he is listed on the 1911 Wellington East roll at 9 Shannon street as a settler, a term which quite a few men seemed to use as they got older. Jane is once again 'married'!! In October 1913 James dies of course. I hope their final years were happy.
